A variety of documents, primarily financial in nature, consisting of checks, promissory notes, and ships' marques, as well as cargo manifests and permits, signatures, a patent letter referring to an invention by John F. King used in canal navigation, notes, surveyor's certificates signed by William Stephens Smith for schooners in New York, and notes written by James Wilkinson regarding ceremonies held in honor of George Washington at his death. Many documents were written by prominent individuals of the Revolutionary War and Federal eras.

William Stephens Smith (b. November 8, 1755, Suffolk County, NY–d. June 10, 1816, Lebanon, NY) was a United States Representative from New York. He married Abigail "Nabby" Adams, the daughter of President John Adams, and was a brother-in-law of President John Quincy Adams.
